MECH 230 Introduction

Applied thermodynamics is the science of the relationship between head, work and the properties of systems.

It deals with the means of converting heat energy from available sources such as fossils fuels into meachnical work.

A heat engine is the name given to a system which by operation in a cyclic manner products net work from a supply of heat.

The laws of thermodynamics are natural hypotheses based on observation.

When a system undergoes a thermodynamic cycle, the net heat supplied to the system from its surroundings plus net work input to the system from its surroundings = 0
* True for complete cycle, Final intrinsic energy of the system = its initial value when there is a change of intrinsic energy.
